Parenting and Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects approximately 10% of women and those assigned female at birth. This condition often causes severe chronic pain that can impact every part of a person’s life. Previous research on chronic pain more broadly suggests that this can have an impact on the children of those with chronic pain, as well as the parent-child relationship. Although we can infer from this evidence that endometriosis may have a similar impact, there has been limited research exploring this. This project aims to explore the longitudinal impact of endometriosis on parenting, child mental health, and child development. We are taking a mixed-methods approach, using data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) to examine associations between parents with endometriosis and their children, and the associated genetic risk. This research will generate knowledge that will contribute to optimising care and support for people with endometriosis and their families.
