Meet the CHAMP research team. Based in the School of Psychology at Manchester Metropolitan University, our researchers, clinicians and PhD students work together to understand the causes, consequences and prevention of mental health problems in children, young people and families.

Professor Rebecca Pearson and Research Group Co-lead
Professor of Developmental Psychology and Epidemiology, School of Psychology
Professor Pearson leads the CHAMP research group, she recently completed a 6-year ERC-funded programme investigating the intergenerational transmission of mental health. Seeing eye to eye: head cams help tackle intergenerational mental health transmission | MHINT Project | Results in Brief | H2020 | CORDIS | European Commission. She combines developmental psychology and epidemiology, pioneering wearable camera technology to study parent–child interactions in real-world settings across the UK and Latin America and establishing creative and authentic ways for expertise by experience to guide ‘design-first’ epidemiology. Her research on perinatal and intergenerational mental health has informed NHS, WHO and parliamentary policy on maternal mental health.
Professor Jonathan Hill and Research Group Co-lead

The guiding principles in Jonathan’s work are that theoretical and empirical developments need to go hand in hand, with real, and not token, influences on each other. This is a philosophical, scientific and psychotherapeutic stance. He has led the development of the My Family Domains Framework (FDF). This is a clinical and therapeutic approach for understanding and working with parents and young people, working with colleagues in Manchester and Oxford on clinical and research developments using this framework.
